  2007 Totteridge Grade 3 Round-up

 Report by Ali Davis

Eight year old Ella Faria won her first Grade 3 10U tournament last week. The event, held at Totteridge LTC in North London attracted strong players from across the region. Ella fought through 3 rounds of tough matches before coming up against fellow club member Lauryn John Baptiste in the final. Lauryn had knocked out the number 2 seed, Pheobe Dart, on her way to the final play off. On the day, Ella took a close fought first set in a tie break, before winning the second set 4-0. It was great to see two Hackney girls in first and second position.

Jac Davies and Tristan Poland Smith also had a good week. Tristan reached the final of the 10U Boys, where he faced Omari Maxwell Owens of Westway High Performance Centre.  Omari played an excellent match, and although Tristan put up a brave fight he had to settle for runners up position on this occasion. Jac Davies breezed his way through 4 rounds of the 11U Boys, knocking out the number 1 seed, Sebatian Matthieu, also of Westway, on his way to the final. There he met Scott Power, who trains at Gosling High Performance Centre. Scott played a very strong game, and took the title in convincing form, with Jac gaining a very credible runners up place.

Other good results came from Callum Poland Smith, who reached the semi finals of the 12U Boys. Lucas Taylor reached the quarter finals of the same event. Kofi Odoom made it to the quarter finals of the 10U Boys. Another player who did exceptionally well is Emily Wickham. Although still a 9.2, Emily knocked out an 8.2 girl in the first round of the 14U girls. In her next match she was up against an 8.1. Emily won the first set, narrowly lost the second on a tie break and then unfortunately lost the champions tie break. As she has 2 more years in this age group Emily shows great promise and potential to do well.

The players will now return to their tough winter training programme, in preparation for their next round of matches and tournaments.
