About Us
Hackney City Tennis Clubs [HCTC] exists to provide and promote the opportunity for everyone to play  tennis in Hackney parks and schools.

There are coaching sessions for Juniors and Adults at all levels as well as a thriving Junior Club and Adult Social Club. We currently have 19 teams playing regular matches:

History

Clissold Park Junior Tennis Club was established in September 1999 with a pay and play session on Saturday mornings for 15 – 20 children.

  • December 1999 the club was properly constituted and became affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).
The pay and play sessions continued throughout the spring and summer terms with the numbers attending gradually increasing.

  • Year 2000 , tennis camps held during the Easter and summer holidays.

  • September 2000, with a £4,600 grant from Awards for All, the club was able to purchase equipment, send local volunteers on coaching courses and introduce 6 x 1 hour coaching courses catering for different ages and abilities. The club also introduced an indoor mini red tennis course using the gym at Kingsland School.
With numbers growing, we attracted the attention of  the LTA who were looking for a suitable venue to launch the ‘City Tennis Clubs’ initiative.

  • April 2001 it was agreed with the LTA and LB of Hackney that Clissold Park Junior Tennis Club should become the pilot project for the City Tennis Clubs programme. Four courts were totally refurbished, including new fencing and the total cost was met by the LTA.
  • June 2001 the City Tennis Clubs initiative launched nationally at Clissold Park.
  • 2002 the remaining 4 courts at Clissold Park were refurbished by the LTA
By 2003 the ‘Club Structure’ for Juniors was completed. This provides the entry and exit routes for players aged 3 – 16 years and the activities offered at each stage.

  • A 3 year sponsorship package from Barclays Capital in September 2003 has enabled the club to develop a performance programme.

24 players between the ages of 7 and 13 years have been nominated as ‘Tour Players’ and 10 players under 8 years have been nominated as ‘Mini Tour Players’. All these players are receiving subsidised coaching sessions.

  • Clissold Park Junior Tennis Club was one of the first LTA nationally accredited Mini Tennis Centres and in
  • April 2003, Clissold Park Junior Tennis Club given County Performance status.
  • There are currently in excess of 1,400 Juniors and 400 Adults in the player database.

Schools Program

The clubs schools programme started in January 2001 and since then we have had coaches working in curricular and extra – curricular time in Hackney primary and secondary schools.

The club is working closely with the SSCO programme to ensure there is quality tennis development in schools.

Primary schools are attached to secondary schools in the borough through cluster groups and each cluster group is linked to the existing, or planned, tennis facilities in the borough.

It is possible that tennis clubs could be developed at each of these sites which would enhance the school/ club links programme.

HCTC organises the Hackney Schools competitive programme which, at the moment, includes:

Primary

  • Mini Tennis Red tournament (Years 3 and below) – Summer Term
  • Mini Tennis Orange Festival and Tournament (Years 5 and below) – Summer Term
  • Mini Tennis Green Festival and Tournament (Years 6 and below) – Summer Term

Winning teams from all these events represent Hackney in the Middlesex County Schools Final.

Secondary
